The original inhabitants of Morocco, in north Africa are commonly known as Berbers. They are thought to be of Euro-Asian origin because of their light skin. Centuries of inter-marriage with Arabs has produced the varied shades of the Moroccan complexion that we see today.
Traditionally you won't find women in restaurants or cafes. They stay at home and look after it while the men take to the streets.
If you are a woman and you make friends and with a Moroccan person, you will probably be invited to that person's home for tea and further conversation or sometimes to a hamman (a Moroccan bath). If you are traveling as a couple (man and woman) you'll probably be invited to a café for tea or as meal.
In general, Moroccan people are very colourful and friendly. Hospitality is an integral part of their culture, so it's easy to get to know them. You can make new friends literally anywhere, if you have the right attitude.
This can often lead to further associations even long term friendships that persist long after your visit. Striking up a friendship with these dynamic and interesting people will give you a fascinating insight into their very different culture and way of life. |
