Morocco is located in the northeast of Africa. It is well known by the Arabs as Al-Margreb.
This is a fascinating country, very close to Europe, but so different at the same time. Another language, culture, and different people with different customs. Morocco is an incredibly diverse country. It´s a land of extremes; from the exotic imperial cities of Marrakech, Meknes and Fez to the many small picturesque coastal villages; from the epic mountain ranges to the stunning coastline with endless miles of sandy beach.
It´s a nature lover´s paradise. Morroco has some of the most spectacular natural landscapes on the planet. The contrasting mountain ranges of the Middle Atlas, High Atlas and the dry southern ranges provide some superb scenery ranging from green, cedar covered slopes to impressive snowy peaks and wild rocky ridges as you head towards the Sahara desert.
The south of the country is covered with massive sand dunes and authentic Moroccan Kasbahs. You´ll see many idyllic fortified villages scattered throughout the palm oasis.
If you´re lucky, You´ll get to meet the locals - the friendly Berber tribes. The Berbers are scattered all across Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt and tend to be concentrated in the mountain and desert regions.
The Moroccan people come from a mixture of Arab-Berber descent. Most of them are Muslim. Islam is the country´s main religion but you´ll also find small Christian and Jewish minorities in various locations. They speak three languages here. Arabic is the official state language, French is the main commercial language and Spanish is also spoken. In most of the tourist resorts they speak English.
Although in some parts of the country the people can be a bit intense (Tangiers in particular), Morocco actually has one of the lowest crime rates in the world. Police and other law enforcement agents are prevalent in all major cities and tourist spots. Once the initial culture shock wears off, you´ll find the Moroccans to be an incredibly friendly and courteous bunch of people, always very welcoming to strangers.
At just a stones throw away from Europe, this is a different continent and a completely different world - Morocco is an amazing experience; one you´ll never forget! |
