The Moroccan Royal Family Morocco

There was a time when talking about the Moroccan Royal Family was a very risky business indeed, especially under the late King Hassan II. There are many stories of people who criticized the king being tortured, sent into exile or even assassinated. It was always a good idea to say nice things about the King Hassan II.
Unfortunately King Hassan died in 1999. When Mohamed VI came to power things became a lot more relaxed. He was affectionately known as the "King of the Poor" and he even owned up to some of what were termed "mistakes of the past".
But even to this day, most Moroccans are reluctant to discuss the king or his family with strangers.
You must remember the king of Morocco is more than just the head of state. He's considered to be a direct descendant of the prophet Mohammed. Any criticism could be interpreted as blasphemy. |
