- 5. Visit the Portuguese City of Mazagan
Mazagan is internationally recognized as a shining example of how Moroccan and European cultures can live in harmony with each other. This well-preserved melting pot is set to provide a massive boost to future tourism. Come and visit Mazagan in Morocco, northern Africa.
Mazagan has recently been added to UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites (which also includes: Fez, Marrakech, Meknes and Essaouira). Now with a total of nine sites, Morocco is one of the countries with the most heritage sites in the world.
The Portuguese port of Mazagan was built back in the 16th Century at a time when Portugal was expanding its reconnaissance into Morocco. It's one of the earliest Portuguse settlements in West Africa. It also marks the beginning of Portugal's overseas empire.
Mazagan (which is part of the city El Jadida) is just 90 kilometres southwest of Casablanca. With its massive Portuguese walls of hewn stone, it doesn't look very Moroccan at all.
The Portuguese built a huge fortification here. With its bastions and ramparts it's a fine example of renaissance military design. Nowadays, the remaining Portuguese buildings include; the church of assumption (built in the Manueline style of late Gothic architecture) and the cistern.
It was eventually taken over by the Sharifan dynasty of Morocco in 1769. After this, most of the Portuguese settlers immigrated to Brazil where they set up 'Novo Mazagan'. Even after the Moroccan take over, a significant European and Jewish population remained in the city.
Mazagan was drawn to UNESCO's attention by its being a classic example of 'Renaissance ideals integrated with Portuguese construction technology'.
Foreign visitors are attracted by its renaissance Portuguese architecture, distinctive and curious 'un-Moorish' look, and the beautiful beach at El Jadida.
Mazagan is definitely one of the most interesting places in this part of the country. It's become very popular with the bourgeoisie of nearby Casablanca, who come here for the unique ambience, beautiful beaches and the nightlife in El Jadida.
