After seeing the sights, what most visitors will do, is of course, go shopping. No visit to Tangiers, Morocco would be complete without seeing the legendary Moroccan Souks.

It's true that there are many tourist-trap shops that sell low quality goods that are likely to fall apart as soon as you get back on the ferry but if you're confident and persistent, you'll fine a wealth of top class crafts - some of the most exquisite you are ever likely to see. Shopping in the bazaars and souks is one of the most entertaining things to do in Morocco, North Africa

Rugs have to be one of Tangiers biggest exports. Nobody gets out of here with buying at least one rug (even if it's only a small one!). Some of them are absolutely stunning pieces of craftwork, but the price and quality varies considerably, so make sure you shop around. Unless you're an expert, you might actually be better off buying one from a good Moroccan importer in your home country.

Leather can be bought at a good price, but the style and quality usually varies quite drastically. Again you need to shop around. Smell it first; some of the cheaper items are cured in goats' urine (which is part of the tanning process). If it smells bad, it's probably poor quality.

In terms of jewellery, your best bet is probably to stick with the more simple Berber designs. In Tangiers, the more simple rings and necklaces are often the most beautiful and compared to European prices, they are incredibly cheap.

The souks and stalls of Tangiers are too numerous to name and there's no guarantee you'll get what you're looking for but it's one of the best ways to see the city, experience the culture and meet the people.
