A riad or ryad is a grand luxurious house built around a patio garden. The word "Riad" actually refers to the garden and not the house. The word "Mansion d'hote" is French for guest house. Most Riads, also spelled " Ryads ", are ancient palaces and private residences that once belonged to Sultan princes, aristocrats, and noble families. Normally located in the Medinas of Marrakesh, Essaouira and Fez, these residences are truly stunning.

Nowadays they have been transformed into luxurious bed and breakfasts and boutique hotels available for rent by room or sometimes by the whole house.

Riads are normally re-done respecting traditional Moroccan architecture. The interior décor and architecture is different from normal homes in many ways - the use of space, in particular.

Instead of just having one main function, the rooms are interchangeable and can be used for many different activities. Most riads have roof terraces (offering superb views), Jacuzzis, ensuite-rooms an some even have plunge pools. Breakfast is normally included in the room price.
